How we compare eSIM providers
This page exists because the travel eSIM niche has a trust problem. Search "best eSIM for Japan" and you will mostly find listicles whose order tracks affiliate payouts, written by people who never left home, quoting prices that expired months ago. Smart searchers have noticed — many now add "reddit" to the query to escape us, the content farms. We think the better answer is to show our work.
The short version
- We compare on criteria (price per GB, caps, throttles, tethering, refunds, support) — never on invented speed tests.
- Every provider fact is checked on the provider's own site and dated. If we can't verify it, we drop it.
- We earn affiliate commissions from some providers (list below). Rankings never follow the payout.
- We publish ranges and floors, not precise prices, because eSIM prices churn weekly.
- We tell you when not to buy an eSIM at all — even though that earns us nothing.
The criteria
Every destination guide applies the same seven checks to each provider's own product pages and help center:
| Criterion | What we look for | Where we check |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Coverage honesty | Which local networks the plan actually uses, and whether the provider names them (e.g. Sim Local names KDDI (au) and SoftBank for Japan; Mobal names Docomo). | Provider destination pages |
| 2. Price shape | Floors and ranges for comparable baskets (1 GB / 7 days, 10 GB / 30 days, unlimited day-passes) — not single cherry-picked prices. | Provider store pages |
| 3. Cap & throttle transparency | What "unlimited" really means: daily high-speed allowances, throttle speeds, hotspot sharing caps. We quote the provider's own wording. | Plan details & help center |
| 4. Activation & validity rules | When validity starts (first connection vs installation), auto-activation deadlines, and pre-install advice. | Provider help center |
| 5. Tethering & device sharing | Whether hotspot use is allowed, capped, or counted against the same balance. | Provider help center |
| 6. Refund terms | Window length, unused-plan treatment, and the conditions attached — read from the legal pages, not the marketing page. | Terms of use / refund policy pages |
| 7. Support reality | Channels (24/7 chat, email, app-only), and any published restrictions (e.g. Saily's Turkey limitations). | Help center & support pages |
How rankings are built (and why we mostly don't rank)
We deliberately avoid "the 10 best eSIMs, ranked". Rank order implies a single scoring formula that fits everyone, and that formula doesn't exist: the best plan for a 3-day city break is a terrible plan for a 30-day multi-stop trip. Instead, each guide names the scenarios (short trip, heavy use, tethering a laptop, needing calls) and shows which verified plans fit each scenario. When we do order things, price-per-GB on a fixed basket is the tiebreaker — and we say so in the article.
What we refuse to claim
- No speed benchmarks. We have never run a lab of speed tests across carriers, and neither have most sites that cite Mbps figures. Real speeds depend on the local network, your device, and the cell you're standing next to. When we mention speeds, it's the provider's own published policy (e.g. Airalo's disclosed 20 Mbps → 1 Mbps daily step-down on its Japan unlimited plan), clearly attributed as their claim, not our test.
- No "best network" verdicts. We report which networks a plan uses when the provider discloses it. Whether au or Docomo or SoftBank is "best" where you're going is not something we can honestly test.
- No precise prices. A price like "$6.10" goes stale the week after we publish. We quote verified floors ("from $4"), verified ranges, and the date we checked, then link the live page.
- No undisclosed placements. Every affiliate link is labeled,
marked
rel="sponsored nofollow", and listed on this page.
What we earn
RoamReady is funded by display advertising and affiliate commissions. As of October 2026 we are signed up to (or intend to apply to) the affiliate programs of the providers below. Commission rates vary by provider and are typically a percentage of your purchase; you never pay more by using our links.
| Provider | Relationship | Typical product |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | Affiliate (commission on sales) | Country/regional/global eSIMs, unlimited day passes |
| Saily (Nord Security) | Affiliate (commission on sales) | Prepaid eSIM app, US number add-on |
| Nomad | Affiliate (commission on sales) | Country eSIMs, Nomad Pass subscription |
| Holafly | Affiliate (commission on sales) | Unlimited-data day passes |
| Sim Local | Affiliate (commission on sales) | Local-carrier eSIMs incl. KDDI (au) Japan plans |
We also cover providers we have no financial relationship with — for example Ubigi and Mobal in the Japan guide — because a comparison that only shows paying providers isn't a comparison. If that ever changes, this table changes the same day.
The conflict of interest, stated plainly
We profit when you buy an eSIM through our links. That is exactly the incentive that produces bad listicles, so we cage it with process: criteria fixed before we look at payouts, facts verified on the provider's site, non-affiliated providers included in every comparison where they're relevant, and a standing article about when not to buy that earns us nothing. If you catch us slipping, tell us and we'll publish the correction.
Sources and dating convention
Every article ends with a "Last verified" line naming the month and the provider pages checked. In this build those pages included Airalo's store and help center, Saily's help center, Nomad's help center, Holafly's product and legal pages, Sim Local's store and support pages, Ubigi's plan pages, and Mobal's Japan eSIM pages — all visited in October 2026. Providers change prices and policies constantly; where a fact could not be verified from the provider's own site during that pass, we dropped it rather than paraphrase a third-party blog.
Corrections
Found a fact that's drifted from reality? Email Vantoron@gmail.com with the article and the provider page that contradicts it. Verified corrections are published with the new date — no silent edits.
